Oooh, I remembered I have this thing. Admittedly I'm dusting it off for fairly selfish purposes but in the context I think that's appropriate, so. :P

So a couple of months ago I ended up signing up for the Rare Women Ficathon, despite my lifelong terror of doing fic challenges ("but I can't write to deadlines," said I, flailing, "I'll just fail harder!"), even if I successfully did Yuletide for the first time ever this past winter.

The end result was this (link to AO3).

Title: Dans La Vitrine
Fandom: Les Misérables
Words: 11,147
Characters: Éponine Thénardier, Cosette Fauchelevent, Gavroche Thénardier
Pairing: Cosette Fauchelevent/Éponine Thénardier
Rating: PG/Teen for some mild language
Warnings: References to past and current physical abuse.
Summary: They inhabit two worlds that only intersect in moments -- slim fragments of time, some stolen and some simply noticed like a reflection in the glass caught out of the corner of one's eye. But it's in those shared moments, when they can see into each other's world, that they're beginning to learn how to live.

So . . . I'm linking this here several weeks after the fact because in thinking about it I realized that I'm genuinely proud of, and satisfied with, this fic. I honestly think this may be the first time in my life I've ever been able to say that, and that it just happens to be the OTP I've shipped since I was twelve years old makes it even better.

Yeah, so I took a half vacation day (that I needed to use anyway) from work to go get and read Omen on release date.

. . . What?

There will be a review writeup tomorrow. But for now, a few general comments.

  • Good brisk read, took me about an hour and a half at 235 pages, and I wasn't even skimming one of the plotlines like I tend to do with the three-beat books.

  • Man, there's some great dialogue in here. Seriously, this might be some of the most outright fun non-Allston dialogue I've seen in EU in a few years.

  • Okay, there's a couple of clunky dialogue moments too, but overall it's solid.

  • Some stuff made me wibble but GOOD, too.

  • I was worried about the new culture/plot element introduced here, thinking it might turn out to be another Karen Traviss sort of situation where too much page time is wasted on it and it doesn't read that compellingly. I am glad I was wrong.

  • Am pleased to note that characterization was solid.

  • Love the interpersonal dynamics between a bunch of people, too.

  • Kudos for a well-written Jaina.

  • Needs more Tahiri (who was handled well), but I'd say that about anything that isn't the latter half of Legacy of the Force.

  • Had to switch mental gears a few times and I blame RP crack for it, but a few things amused me probably more than they should have. And made me go o.O.

  • Christie Golden definitely knows her EU, and it shows.

  • Christie Golden can definitely stay. I like her here.

  • al;ksjdlk;ajfksjdf ending.

  • I'm so rereading this tomorrow.

Because I've been speculating on the connections between Fate of the Jedi and the Legacy comics (I blame [profile] jainamsolo's post about Outcast) and certain hypotheses fill me with glee ([profile] comedownstairs is not helping me be less flaily about it) and things.

In a fit of masochism disguised as "figuring things out for future RP canon catchup purposes" I was rereading the NJO Force Heretic trilogy the other day. (Oh god, those books are painful, I totally just read them for the SURPRISE RANDOM SLASHY SUBTEXT. I don't know.) Said fit of masochism led to me sort of halfway re-skimming the Dark Nest books. Because I'm stupid or something, I don't know.

Anyway, there was this one line in there that made me all keysmashy, having read Legacy of the Force and looking back on this. )

JESUS, TROY DENNING. WAY TO FORGET YOU WROTE THAT LINE. *headdesk*

*ahem* I'm fine now, really.

Holy crap.

Power Rangers RPM completely freaking blew me away today. Which I said about last week's ep. And the one before that. And the one before that.

How the hell does this show keep topping itself? It's like they missed the memo about how it's PR, and it should be cheesy and lack continuity and be completely devoid of character development or something.

I have never had PR make me slap both hands over my mouth and go "Holy SHIT" before. Even [profile] shadowriter can't stop watching.

It's insane. And bizarre.

And I freaking absolutely love it.
